Census of Marine Life

What did live in the oceans? What will live in the oceans? These questions, compelling for society and for science, motivated the effort to mobilize the resources needed to conduct a worldwide Census of Marine Life (CoML). The purpose of CoML has been to assess and explain the diversity, distribution, and abundance of marine life. Each plays an important role in what is known, unknown, and may never be known about what lives in the global ocean. CoML is comprised of a global network of researchers in more than 80 nations.  In October 2010 we helped report the highlights of the 10-year scientific project.  We continue to participate in dissemination and evaluation, as well as ponder what’s next for ocean observation.
